What are some examples of innovation or inventions through history held back for jaw-droppingly stupid reasons?

The story of Ignaz Semmelweiss, the person credited with sanitizing surgeon practices, yet it took a decade for it to catch on, because big medicine didn't believe it'd work, and he also wrote his methods in Hungarian, which very few understood.

Are there any other stories like that throughout history?
