Help needed with osx internet recovery

I have a MacBook Pro (late 2011) that originally came with Lion and I upgraded over the years to El Capitan. Capitan was recently crashing on startup so I tried to apply internet is x recovery as a fix. I launched internet recovery, erased my disk and tried installing Lion. I can't complete the installation due to the below errors that happen at different times of the process:

1. Immediately when Internet Recovery downloads all Lion files for installation an error appears: 'an error occured while preparing the installation. Try running this application again'
2. After files downloaded, Mac restarts and begins installation. Installation immediately fails: 'installation couldn't complete, recovery could not be setup'

Can someone please help?
