How long should I give an underperforming starter before benching him?

Pretty self explanatory. I've got a higher rated player having a poor season. Despite his high ratings, is it unreasonable to give a younger guy/bench guy a shot? If so, when should I reintroduce the dropped player back to the starting lineup?
