[DISCUSSION] Why is Halsey such a polarizing figure?
Forgive me if this post is considered a stale topic. I tried to make sure it's not and that it hasn't been posted before.
This thread isn't about Halsey's music at all. I am not talking about whether it's good or bad, overrated or underrated. This is about her as a person.
It seems to me that a lot of pop fans really despise Halsey and have a low opinion of her, and by extension her fandom. I see a lot of derisive terms applied to her such as that she's pretentious, unoriginal, a sellout, and trying too hard to be edgy.
On the other hand, she does have a lot of fans and r/popheads at least seems to generally be okay with her, and talks about her music rather than her as a person. But she has a real hatedom on the rest of the internet.
She also attracts a lot of misogynistic assholes who claim she had to fuck her way to the top rather than being talented. I know this isn't new for women musicians, but she seems to get it more than most.
It seems she gets a lot of negative comparisons to Lana Del Rey and/or Lorde, even though to me they all have a completely different image. Sky Ferreira also seems to dislike her.
I've heard her fans described as boring and basic, or rabid stans, and other derogatory things.
Why is it that she attracts so much vitriol based on her public image and not just her music? Is it because she's associated with the Chainsmokers, who everyone hates? Is she really that popular among basics? Is it because her fans are seen as too alternative and "tumblr"? Is it because she has tattoos and dyed hair? Or is there something else I'm missing?
(I also read the r/popheads roast of her which featured a lot of the stereotypes/memes mentioned above, but I still don't get where they come from.)
