Thinking of making a drastic career change into teaching geology and earth science.
Hi there. I have a really diverse career history. I am 35 and I currently actually live and work in Japan. I currently have a successful career promoting Kyoto City. I have even have worked as a designer. My father is a chemistry teacher and I have a background of loving science all my life, but I do not have a degree in science.
For a number of reasons, I am considering leaving my career here in Japan in the next couple years, and I want to go into teaching. I think there are a few subjects I could teach successfully, but I feel very strongly that I would like to go into teaching earth science and geology, specifically at a Jr. High level, possibly moving up to high school after a few years. Oh, by the way, I do have teaching experience, but not as a school teacher in the USA and not anything related to science.
I am originally from Utah where it is possible to get certified to teach if you can pass a praxis test and then get you teaching certificate in the first year. I am fairly confident that with some study I can easily pass these tests(I have already done well on a practice test I took without studying.), but I want to do the best I can and start preparing right away.
I am posting this here because I am curious if any of you out there have any advice for me, any favorite resources for learning, either serious or fun. I am looking for things that will help get me up to speed, but also things that are fun. Because I love science because it is so fun and fascinating. I wonder if any of you out there are working teaching geology.
Also, I think many of you are familiar, but there are lots of things about Utah that would make it a great place for teaching geology anyway.
Thanks!!!
