plot hole in book 1

in book 1 is around a book with everyones real name, which can be used to control them and bla bla bla.

and we know that it is impossible to steal it since magic stuff will make you change your mind when you come close. but the mirror thing stephanie uses has no own thoughts, would'nt you be able to use one of those to steal the book?

sorry if this makes no sense, i have only read the swedish versions of the books, and only the first 3 since my local library don't buy in the rest of them. no spoilers please from the 3rd book and onward.
