How did my iPhone learn my boyfriend's nickname?

When my dad or my boyfriend call, my iPhone displays their nickname (names that only I call them and couldn't have been brought in from an app or Facebook)

I haven't added this information to the contact but if I search contacts for the nicknames their number comes up. How did my iPhone learn/do this? Did it listen to my phone calls and learn their nicknames?
