I [20m] Can't Read Extremely Introverted [19f]
I [20m] have it bad for [19f] who is both highly sociable and an extreme-introvert. She's what I would consider a highly academic and intelligent girl and while not naive, is kind-hearted sometimes to the extent of her own detriment. She also seems to be generally unaware of how physically attractive she is (quite attractive, I assure you).
In social situations she's one of the most sociable, loud and talkative people I've ever met. She has this personality quirk that allows her to adapt keenly to whoever she's associating with. I call it "personality matching". On one hand, these traits have made her many acquaintances and she is generally well liked and held in high regard (this was true all through high school for students and teachers alike). On the other hand, being introverted, this phenomenon has made her many false friends and exposed her to a lot of elitism which she finds absolutely repulsive. She's very emotionally strong but this seems to be a topic she is sensitive about.
Outside of social situations, she is the opposite of sociable, to the extent of self describing as a "hermit". I think hermit is a bit of an extreme term, but she does have a tendency to go for relatively long periods without contacting her friends or myself (sometimes several weeks at a time). During these periods she either doesn't check her phone or ignores the texts and calls she receives. She also seems to leave her house only as obligated by school/ work. The first time I observed this happen, I thought it was just me, but subsequently I have affirmed this is a behavioral pattern she falls into (hence my use of the term "extreme introvert").
As for our personal relationship, it's sort of difficult to describe. I had a crush on her throughout high school. I finally grew some balls and asked her to our high school's prom, whereafter we had numerous flirtatious exchanges and I got to really enjoying her company. We since became well acquainted and attended the same community college. To make a long story slightly less long, I eventually asked her out, she turned me down on the grounds of not wanting a relationship while dealing with personal issues. From what I gathered her whole (immediate) family has been through some hard stuff emotionally speaking. She had previously offered an ear when I was dealing with some difficult things without being the slightest bit invasive, and I wanted to offer her the same courtesy, so I didn't inquire further. It seems to be the case she is very weary of close interpersonal relationships and opening up to people/ exposing her vulnerabilities.
In any case she is certainly aware of my romantic attraction to her and, to my pleasant surprise, since that incident we've gotten closer. Maybe I was being pessimistic but I had initially figured she would push me away. Instead, overtime she's progressively initiated far more conversations with me, been more playful (even slightly physical on rare occasions) and subtly flirtatious.
Flashforward to a few months ago after our home life circumstances have changed a bit, I asked her out again and she said yes. I was initially afraid she wouldn't see the occasion as a date, but after seeing how nicely she dressed and some direct allusions she made, well, it was a date. We followed that up with another, more casual date and it was just as awesome. She's told me progressively more sensitive stuff and I've done the same. The conversations we have are some of the best I've ever had with anyone. As during these dates she went out of the way to express interest in getting involved in some of my hobbies, I figured that would make a good follow up.
Except, now she's gone into her self described "hermit" mode again and I haven't heard from her in a month. Our relationship is never dampened when she emerges from these and she is far more apologetic for them than she needs to be, which is not at all. I'm moderately introverted myself, so I understand, respect and admire her alone-time preferences. On one hand.
However, on the other hand, I really like this girl and each time she goes several weeks without contact I am disheartened. I worry she wants nothing to do with me, that she's uninterested or I may have emotionally hurt her in some way. As of this moment I have not heard from her in a month.
I know her well enough to know that neither of us has ever had any sort of romantic or sexual relationship, which may or may not be a pertinent detail. Moreover, if there was to be anything of the sort between us, it would be a serious monogamous relationship.
Also, while I do not believe she has any mental health conditions, some members of her immediate family do.
I need an outsiders perspective on this situation. Should I be taking these "no contact" periods as an indicator of disinterest or is it possible she likes me and this is just her introversion at work?
Tl;Dr: [19f] goes through hermit periods of up to several weeks, I [20m] can't tell whether she has any interest in a relationship with me.
