PSA: Before you submit a photo, please make sure it's clear! Here's how to do this.

Sorry if it's not clear (heh) what I mean by "clear" in the title, I didn't know what better word to use. I mean that occasionally a photo is submitted that's very dark and low contrast. You may have seen some comments of mine with edits of these pictures, since I have this compulsion "I have to see the kitty more clearly!" and I can't help myself :) It takes very little time and effort and I don't mind doing this, but I think that if the OPs submitted clear photos to begin with, their posts would be more popular and they would get more karma they deserve. So here's a quick guide on what to do, perhaps it will help someone. I'm not a photography expert or anything, so feel free to correct me or add something in the comments :)

First of all: have a critical look at your picture and determine if it's clear. If you photographed your kitty against a window or a white wall or in low light conditions, your picture may not be clear. Same with black and dark cats, it's difficult to take a nice picture of them. Are your cat's eyes clearly visible in the picture, or barely outlined? If it's the latter, you may want to edit the photo.

I use the free android app PhotoDirector, it's nice and has many functions, Snapseed is also nice and easy to use. If you know any other android or iPhone app you can recommend, please do so in the comments!

In PhotoDirector you just open the app, pick the picture you want to edit, then click "Adjust" in the bottom bar, pick "Tone" and click the circle with "Auto" on it. Then, in the same "Adjust" menu pick "White Balance" and also set it to Auto. You may want to play with the slider at the bottom a bit if the auto mode makes your photo too warm or too cool.

This should result in a clearer photo! You can also try different things like adjusting saturation or applying a vignette, but what I described should be enough to make your photo look a bit better :)
