The one where she invited us to move in with her then tried to kick us out.

You guys seemed to like my first post yesterday (Open to names for my mum) so I thought I'd feed the llamas and detail the time we stupidly moved in with her.

We'd happily lived away for 5 years in a different part of the country, but there was a university program that I really wanted to go into that looked very good in my hometown. Discussed with DH and we talked about possibly moving back, however we would have to leave our full time jobs.

Brought the idea up to mum who was “so excited! It’s perfect!”. She immediately offered her spare room to us and said she wouldn’t think of making us pay, that we can have it for the entire course with a view to buying our own place after. Food is on her! Don’t worry about a thing!

…I was naïve enough to believe that this could be genuine. After all, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? HA.

(Also, we offered to pay for help for her during the week as our contribution. Then she said she needed it immediately.. fine, we’ll start paying immediately even though we’re not moving for a month and a half. Oh you changed your mind about food? That’s fine we’ll get our own. Oh it would help to have a bulk payment in advance? I’m an idiot and sent it. Mini rant over.)

Skipping all the bits that happened while we lived there (We lasted 9 months, mainly because DH had trouble getting a full time job so we could move). One time she tried to kick us out when Mum’s BF refused to move in with her…unless he got his own office. It was “too crowded” otherwise.

So at work one night I got a text.

Mum: “BF came to a compromise, he will live with me as long as there is a maximum of 3 people living there”

EXCUSE ME?

So that’s her, BF and my younger brother. Underhanded telling DH and I she wants us out. She then added this gem:“He thinks you should stand on your own two feet as a married couple”

Cue absolute explosion from me. We lived alone for five years. We only moved because she offered it to us, and I took the university program and we left our jobs in no small part due to that offer. I made sure she was aware of how shitty a move this was.

Mum: “I don’t like your attitude towards me right now. Don’t talk to me like crap”

I went into instant panic/meltdown mode. I couldn’t fuel the fire and tell her to piss off, we had literally nowhere else we could go. I had to play her game and say that it’s not fair “of him”. Because it can’t be her fault that she’s even entertaining the idea. Cue the pity party for her:

Mum: “I’m in a shit situation whatever way I turn”, “There is no way out for me I can only fail”, “I’m cornered, totally cornered with nowhere to go”.

Well fucking figure it out. We had no way to move out. That was one of the few times I was ready to completely cut contact with her permanently if she did this to us, and she definitely knew it.

The next day: Mum’s Text: “Do you want to come and play some golf?”

I wish I was joking. She didn’t mention it again, she knew she fucked up. Obviously we got our own place as soon as humanly possible, but it unfortunately took a few more months.
