Men, women, accidental pregnancy and what happens next - a scenario and six questions.

Scenario

Let's say there are two women: Annie and Barbara. They're both single, college graduates; both 23, both working in marketing jobs as junior execs and working their way up - in another 2-3 years' time they could be in good positions in their respective companies.

One night, each of them goes to a party - Annie goes to an after gig party of a grunge band in the drummer's house; Barbara goes to a party in the hotel suite of some company execs. after the end of an out of town conference.

Both Annie and Barbara get high/drunk and both have a (consensual!) one night stand which leaves them pregnant.

Annie is pregnant to the guitarist of the band, Chad. He's single, handsome, 33, and works in Walmart during the day and spends the rest of his time gigging with his band. The band has been together 10 years and they've sent out dozens of demo tapes but still not struck it rich. He's not well off and has a cheap room in a shared house in an undesirable part of town.

Chad wants to have the child and tells Annie this.

Barbara is pregnant to the Senior Sales Manager for the Pacific West, Don. He's single, handsome, 33, and works in a major international company. He works long hours, but has an apartment in the city, a condo on the beach and drives a top-of-the-range company car. He's been at the company for 10 years and his future is looking very bright.

Don does not want to have the child and tells Barbara this.

Questions

1 Who is more likely to want to keep the child? Annie or Barbara? Why?

2 If one or both of them keep the child, how likely do you think it would be for Annie/Barbara to want emotional and/or financial support from Chad/Don? How likely do you think it would be for Annie/Barbara to choose to go it completely alone without the father's involvement?

3 Who is more likely to want to bear the child, but then give him/her up for adoption immediately after the birth? Annie or Barbara? Why?

4 Who do you think is more likely to seek an abortion? Annie or Barbara? Why?

5 If Annie chooses to terminate the child, should Chad be allowed to persuade her to not have the abortion?

6 If Barbara chooses to keep the child, should Don be allowed the possibility of Legal Paternal Surrender?

Edit

A lot of people seem to be obsessing about the religion of Annie/Barbara and on whether they want children or not - these points are for you to decide on in your answer, if you choose to answer.

The scenario says:

They're both single, college graduates; both 23, both working in marketing jobs as junior execs and working their way up - in another 2-3 years' time they could be in good positions in their respective companies.

I leave it to you to decide how likely a 23 year old college graduate on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder would be to want to give up that career to have a child.

This may also be useful:

Dependent variable: Annie/Barbara (identical in every way - they have good educations and the promise of career success of their own in the next few years)

Independent variables: Chad and Don - a) financial and social status (low/high); b) likely ongoing financial security (low/high); c) desires the child / does not desire the child.

The basic idea is that the chances of keeping the child or having a termination are tied to the financial and social status of the man, regardless of the man's wishes to keep the child or not - high financial and social status, more likely to keep the child; low financial and social status, more likely to terminate.

It's a hypothetical - the religion of the women is completely irrelevant to the scenario even if it would be relevant if they were real women.
