Hijacking Father's Day

Father's day is always a bit underwhelming. At least when compared to the extravaganza that is Mother's day. I normally don't mind and take it all in stride. Let's be honest, I don't really have a choice in the matter... At least not one I am willing to reconcile.

This year we are taking things to a new level. Cranking them up to eleven, you might say. For Father's day weekend my wife has planned a camping trip (I hate camping) with my somewhat estranged Mother in Law, her sister and her sisters fiance (both avid campers who insist upon doing things the natural way). The MIL is wrapping up a two week stay with us and we are going for the sisters wedding later this year. So this is not the only opportunity we have to see them.

The departure time is 8am EST this morning and we have a three hour drive to the camp grounds. I've already been put on notice that we will not be leaving early on Sunday. Her plan is to stay as long as possible to maximize family time. This means an evening return on Sunday just in time for bed and work the following morning.

We will be camping in a location without showers or bathrooms, and shacking up in close quarters (seriously uncomfortable for me). My wife will do her best to make the weekend about maximizing the time my son gets to spend with the estranged MIL, her sister and her sisters fiance. My son's first time fishing will probably be with my sisters not yet husband because my wife will insist and throw a huffy fit if I dare interject.

All I really want for Father's day is to spend time doing things with my six year old son. Any dad's out there who can relate?

I love my wife and family but FML this weekend!
