Last minute trip to RMNP, where to camp?

My mother and I decided yesterday that we're headed to Colorado from 6/27 to 7/2.We'll be flying in and consequently gearless. Would it be better to rent equipment and camp either at a campsite or somewhere in the park? Or size up the car rental and sleep at trailheads? Is the latter allowed?
