Me [37M] just broke up with my GF [35F] of two years. I've run out of energy.
Just had the final conversation with my now ex girlfriend. We'd been going out for two years, but known each other for a while before. A couple of weeks ago we had our first proper fight and slept in different rooms. Next day she'd gone back to her place and she didn't speak to me for several days.
We finally spoke at length a week ago, and covered a lot of ground. Essentially, from my side she'd been putting less and less effort into the relationship over the last 6 months or so, and I'd run out of ideas on how to push it on, or keep carrying it. I stated how I was finding it exhausting having to always tidy/clean up after her, cook (I exaggerate a little, but life was getting more demanding) and I was out of ideas on how to keep it going.
For her part, she'd agreed she'd withdrawn, but because I'd not been able to say "I miss you" if she'd been away for the day (she'd all but moved in pretty quickly and to be honest I was feeling a little smothered). I was hoping for a bit more "We could try this" "How about that".
We spoke again this evening, or rather I did. I felt that I couldn't deliver what she wanted in the relationship, that we should be further along after two years than we are, and we've regressed pretty badly over the last 6 months. I'd feel bad carrying on unless she was happy to. She said a few things, then got up and left. I was, in a way, still hoping that she'd either agree and it be a mutual thing, or there'd be a little more fight, an attempt at wanting to make it work.
I am, and will be sad. I know I am and can be quite emotionally withdrawn - she knew this before we got together, we'd even spoken about it. My gut/head feels that if she was unhappy about my lack of openness or outward commitment (which is funny, several of my friends have mentioned to her when I wasn't around that I've been much more mature and conscientious than I have in the past), I want to ask what she's done to bring that out of me? What's she done to re-ignight the flame, the passion? Why always leaving it to me to make the effort? I do want to keep trying but it had to be from her side.
There's more to add, but less significant and just adding finer details.
tl;dr: Going out for two years. I find it difficult to express myself. Girlfriend never took the lead much. Last 6 months started to try to push forward, and GF starts to put less effort into it, but explains that this is due to me not being that open or in to it. There are many things that bugged me in the relationship, several of which I mentioned but never saw much effort in resolving. It's worn me down.
