Driver's License renewal: Can I still renew my DL after the expiration date? If so, how many days from the date do I have until I can't renew anymore?

Driver License renewal: I am out of state and my parents received my dmv renewal notice saying that I have to renew in person since I did the past 2 renewals via Internet. My DL will expire in August and I won't be back to CA until end of September.

Note: I do not trust DMV.org (it's not the official website) and I can't find info on the dmv.ca.gov. I have my passport with me so, I will have no problem with the return flight.
