Stop limits are great for the WAF. But what to hedge against?

Long time listener, first time caller. As a computer science devotee, cryptocurrency as a technology fascinates me. But last week I finally couldn't bear to stay only intellectually invested, and put some skin in the game as well. Now cryptocurrency is a whole lot more exciting!

Monero stood out in my research as the right fit for me and I'm very pleased with the choice so far. However, the process of acquiring XMR for trading is rather convoluted here in Australia. I eventually chose to take the safe route of bank transferring Australian Dollars (AUD) into Independent Reserve, converting to USD, buying XBT there, then withdrawing into Poloniex to finally exchange for XMR.

Surprisingly, my wife has taken quite a bit of interest over my shoulder. To help allay her fears, I explained that I'll use a system of stop limits to stymie losses. This has helped greatly with the Wife Acceptance Factor. The question I haven't been able to satisfy however: just how practical is a stop limit is on Poloniex, given that I can't trade for AUD directly?

At the end of the day, we feel safe with AUD in the bank. If the jitters suddenly set in and we need to bail, what should we be trading for? The default option is XBT, but we'd only be at the mercy of the AUD/XBT rate. The whole point of investing in XMR was to avoid the seemingly overvalued XBT/ETH bubble. Isn't a crisis in XMR is likely to be correlated with XBT, and so does it really do any good to set a stop limit against XBT?

Is USDT a better backup?
