'''author124@raisedbynarcissists: That time my younger sibling tried to guess my password TL;DR: After our older sibling left for college, I became SG and my younger sibling became GC. Apparently this means they're allowed to try and break into my laptop.
So when I was about 18 or so, making my younger sibling about 13 or 14, I had my computer with me when we were on vacation. Some of our cousins were also on vacation with us. I was lying in bed reading, and my sibling came in to ask me if they could use my computer. I said no, they whined about how I wouldn't have to get up and could give them the password. Still said no.
I turned off the light and was going to bed. Almost asleep, the door opened. It was sibling again, asking if they could use the computer. Groggily and understandably more irritated this time, I said something along the lines of, "No, leave me alone, I'm trying to sleep."
The next morning, I found out that my sibling and our cousins tried to guess the password on my laptop so that they could use it, after I had said no several times very clearly. I got angry and, while looking back it could have been handled better, at the time felt justified in doing so. They had attempted to violate my privacy and gone against my very clearly expressed wishes regarding my personal property.
What did my parents and my aunt and uncle do, you might ask?
I was told that I was being too harsh, that it was selfish of me to not loan my computer to them, and that I was overreacting. They disturbed my sleep to ask a question I had already answered, then went ahead and disregarded it anyways. And yet I was the bad one. https://redd.it/6hs4oj

- ReallyMeNot: Yes you sound very selfish. If you have a computer, and they don't, why not share it with them when you are not using it? And if you are going to bed and trying to sleep, you clearly are not using it.
- sci_five: ...because it's the OP's computer? And they have every right to say who does and does not get to use it, ESPECIALLY when they don't trust the people asking to treat it appropriately. They might have banking information, account passwords or sensitive emails on it, for all we know. I know giving someone access to my laptop would actually breach a bunch of data protection laws because of the confidential information I store on there for my job.
Even if that's not the case for OP, no, it's not selfish. It's their computer and they call the shots. I'd have done the exact same thing.
- ReallyMeNot: Dictionary.com: Selfish 1. devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.
- sci_five: I have literally no idea what you're trying to say here. The OP's actions don't fit this definition of "selfish".
- literallyOfficer: literally I have literally no idea what you're trying to say here?
