Olfactory receptor cell chlorine efflux query

I noticed olfactory receptor cells efflux chlorine as part of its way to depolarise and generate an action potential. But normally extracellular chlorine concentration is greater than intracellular chlorine concentration. So why does the chlorine go from inside the cell, to outside?
