The Fickle Fandom
Look. It should surprise no one at this point that the fans of drag race are some of the most fickle and volatile bunch of self-righteous people anywhere in pop culture. We, as a whole, demand drama, and then attack those who bring the drama. We demand sweet hearts to fall in love with, and then are indignant when they are punished for their mistakes, and then turn around and relish in their downfall. We love shitstirrers, and yet have no shame in going to their social media and attacking them. We expect our winners, or frontrunners, to be slaying the game every week, and then go ahead and judge them for being too into the game and not giving "human emotions", but when they do we start attacking them again.
This reunion showed both the best and worst of the queens and the fans. It was dramatic. It's messy. It's shady. Alexis Michelle got read to filth. Again. Charlie got what was coming. Shea unleashed all the pettiness and shade she was holding back all season and threw away her calculated lines. Even Sasha and Peppermint showed their claws.
And Valentina showed she was not as lovely as she showed herself to be. Is that a bad thing? Any of it? NO! Everyone knows the queens now edit themselves on the show. Bianca did it. Bob did it. Shea did it. Tina did it, but with her the facade showed a bit more, the mask cracked at the seams. Fame and Laganja tried and failed. Pearl accepted hers eventually and ran with it. Valentina was in for the competition as well as the TV show elements, and she worked it well. People who have a problem with her not being the most friendly forget that this is JUST a competitive show where the goal is to show off yourself and reach the finals. No one has to be anything that they don't want to be. Was she wrong in staying silent about the fan harassment of her fellow queens? ABSOLUTELY. She only was thinking of her own PR. Point blank. And it took a hit today because of it.
And the fans. Gurl, calm yo asses down. You have absolutely to go around and attack people for what they did on a tv show that is such a high pressure environment and gets edited any which way the showrunners want. Go celebrate your favorite. Give them love. Share it. Spread it.
