Is Convict Conditioning a good program if tweaked and done in combination with other exercise?

Hi there,

So I'm a 27 year old male in average shape and reasonably active. I used to do various sport and have never been seriously out of shape. I'm looking to start bodyweight training and trying to find a good place to start. I also want to combine bodyweight training with other exercise.

I've read a lot of the posts on here about Convict Conditioning being inadequate and lacking in many regards. Is it really that bad for a beginner? I understand the rep ranges are too high and the progressions too slow but with a bit of tweaking, is it really that bad? The thing which attracts me to it is that it's relatively simple. I don't want a routine which is going to be really intensive and only be done three times per week (such as the recommended routine on here). I also want to do plyometrics and sprints, jogging and other sport in my spare time. I also have parallettes which I could use for things like L-sits.

I'm thinking of doing one of the six exercises in the morning over six days in the week (or maybe two of them) and then in the evenings do something else such as what I've mentioned above. Is this a good approach for a beginner or do you think it's a waste of time and I should just do some other program such as the recommended one on here?

Also, for those who have worked through Convict Conditioning, did you follow it to a tee, or did you modify it as suggested on here (progressing when able to do 3 sets of 10 reps of particular progression and starting the progressions at the one you can do rather than the first one?)

Thanks!
