It's really not, it can be profitable for the slavers
Why do you think employers try and pay as little as possible, most of the time minimum wage? They care about their profit. Question, when looking for a service(house decoration, cleaning, car workshop, etc.), do you hire the most expensive that's available because you think of the economy(as you said "but from an economic standpoint you're much better having paid workers who can then consume much more") or do you go for the cheapest out there that offers the same benefits?
an economic standpoint you're much better having paid workers who can then consume much more, giving you exponential growth.
Wow never thought of it like that, go ahead and tell that to Saudi Arabia, you'll surely end modern slavery!/s
A slave doesn't contribute to the economy in the same way a paid worker does
You're missing the point, an employers wants as cheap labour as he can get, he always tries to cut costs and maximize profit. You don't pay a no-skill worker the same as an engineer, now think how much you'd cut costs if you didn't have to pay them anything and could overwork them.
And slavery isn't only down to labour, it's sex slavery too, I can't believe I have to explain why modern slavery exists and why people used to do it..
