Am I in a band?

I'm a freelancing bassist. I do a lot of background music, play in a few cover bands and with one or two original artists as well as being a frequent busker.

I assume most of you are in the same boat. When people ask me what I do and ask if "Im in a band" I never know what to say. I know what they really mean "oh you play bass? What band are you in so I know when you're famous"

Whats you're guy's (is that a word) 2 cent response to questions like this? How do you answer this in a way that doesn't lose people's attention and maybe even be sucessful networking (like "hey I play weddings, are you or people you know getting married?")
