How long until your tiel (or other bird) "settled in"

I've had Perry for two weeks now. He was hand raised and would step up when I got him. He loves being out of his cage as soon as we get home from work to just hang out on us or perch up on the couch. But he wants to be close to you he doesn't like to wonder and explore. If i try to set him down on the floor, counter, desk, table, etc he will just fly back up to me. I was wondering how long it took for your new tiel to be comfortable to roam around and get into mischief? He also never relaxes his crest even though he seems comfortable and content while your holding him. He doesn't even relax it when hes in his cage. Here is the adorable Perry (crest is always like this, well usually slightly more relaxed) This was right after we brought him home, hence the lack of stuff in his cage at that time. http://i.imgur.com/veikUXA.jpg
