My excitements and fears for Spider-man: Homecoming
I've watched spider-man since the beginning. I used to watch spider-man 2 all the time. Since then, they've come out with TASM which eventually fell on itself. There are definitely things I'm excited for and things I'm dreading in this new spider-man. The things I love is that they are trying to establish spider-man as a hero. I feel as though it is focusing on him and how he views himself and his place in the world. I'm glad they are trying to push the plot to a "He has to earn his spot as a hero". Yet I have a few things I'm worried about. What really brought life to the original spider-man movies was the heart. You saw uncle ben die and his famous line "With great power, comes great responsibility". You really saw peter parker struggle with this and finding the fine line on controlling his powers. I really hope this pushes deeper into character development past the "I just want to be a hero" and the only downside to being a hero is Tony Stark catching him using his powers. I want it to feel powerful and Peter to really question whether he should use his powers more than just Tony telling him not to. This brings me to my second fear. Why is Tony Stark/Iron Man in this movie? Beyond the obvious answer, "To bring in that cash" but to act as a mentor to spider-man. But I have a feeling it won't stick. I've had a feeling Marvel has begun beating the dead horse of Tony Stark's wit and one liners. It's like ice cream. It's great and feels good but if you have too much of it, afterwards you just feel hollow and end up hating yourself. But in order for it to stick, it needs to be emotionally connectable. I think that over the past few movies with Iron Man, they haven't established him deeper and deeper as a connectable character and that's what I worry about. You're going to have this mentor that you don't really care about more than having him around for his lasers and funny lines.
