Font Setup

Fonts on Linux have always sucked (though Ubuntu has done better than most).

Years ago it was 10x worse, but since then, a few patents have expired and also Google and others have open-sourced some really high quality fonts.

I think F25 was the first release to use some of the recently expired patents in their Freetype build. However, they still suck compared to Windows and especially Mac.

Does anyone have a bullet-proof setup for getting alternative Freetype compiles, font configuration, and then installing specific fonts and customizing Gnome, Chrome, Java, etc?

I've tried some of the Infinality guides - big improvement, but I'm still constantly zooming in and out of web sites and even apps as it's rarely consistent.
