I [28 M] want to ask our landlord for permission to grow marijuana. My roommates [23-28 M/F] don't want to bring attention to us being weed friendly.

Since the passing of proposition 64 in California, I've thought it would be a fun project to grow a marijuana plant in our backyard. I want to do this legally, and want to ask permission from our landlord to grow. However, my roommates don't want me to talk to our landlord because they fear this will bring unwanted attention to us (they smoke in the house and think that by me asking this could jeopardize our lease or them smoking in the house). Should I go ahead and ask the landlord about our lease and how it pertains to the new proposition 64? I think this is the right way to go about it but they disagree. How can I handle this situation by getting what I want without causing strife with my roommates?

tl;dr: I want to ask my landlord for permission to grow marijuana. My roommates want me to not grow without permission, but don't want me to ask for permission.
