Working on an alternative to an air ladder in low tech tank. What is your homebrew experience?

Discussion

Preamble: I'm fairly new to live plants in tank. I was gifted a 55 gal tall tank with fluval 405 filter and was bitten by the aquarist bug.

I decided to add real plants to my tank thinking it'd be simple to watch them fill out. Months later and the only plant that seemed to not die a slow death was an anubias nana which has done ok. Being diligent with my water parameters and having a fairly good light source I was at a loss until I considered a possible lack of dissolved gasses in the water, the tank being tropical 78-80F doesn't help retain gasses. Not yet ready to jump into dosing with CO2 I was looking into purchasing an air ladder when I had an idea.

So Friday night I started my project in a temporary configuration to see how it would do and I have to say I'm super impressed so far even in such a short time that I felt the need to share and wanted to discuss with r/plantedtank alternatives to CO2 or homebrew setups you have implemented.

The specifics of what I've done. I've routed the outflow from my canister filter to a clear acrylic tube about 2" in diameter. The tube sits vertical and the water shoots about halfway down the tube greatly agitating the water and air in the tube which then comes out the bottom (think large air bubbles rising back up and only the smallest bubbles are light enough to be forced out the bottom with the water). An airstone is placed at the bottom of the tube which keeps the tube from eventually filling with water, the airstone bubbles aren't small enough to be pushed out of the bottom. This seems to be better than an air ladder since it is churning the bubbles until they are small enough to exit the tube instead of just having the bubbles in the water a little bit longer. I was concerned about noise at first but it's barely audible in a stark quiet room over the air pump and filter and I haven't heard it at all with the tv on.

So not only is there a neat water feature with swirling bubbles but even in this short time the bearded algae in the tank has gone from a dark green to a lighter green and seems to have perked up.
