Patronless Wizard

Can a wizard be patronless?

I can, of course, see the benefits of having one, but if a PC wanted to make some kind of pure wizard, untainted by outside sources, is that possible per the rules?

It seems as though it is (and that maybe more wizards lack patrons then have them), since the wizard might not ever find the spell necessary to contact a patron in the first place. (Patron Bond).
