SUMMON THE DOWNVOTES - Why can't I treat CW like any other digital mode?
I love using JT65, and I think RTTY has its place. But, for some reason, it is verboten in the ham radio community to suggest that one should use an encoder/decoder/keyer when using CW.
Look, I appreciate the dedication it takes to learn and speak that language, but (and this is where the downvotes happen) I feel that learning morse code is like learning semaphore or Esparanto - I appreciate the value, but simply don't think the benefits outweigh the expenses in terms of time and effort.
Sorry. I know you hate me already. In fact, I'm afraid to tell my local ham radio club for fear or being ostracized. Seriously.
Yes, FLDigi and HRD/DM780 do CW, and of course CW propagates better than (almost) any other mode, but I think this is a real barrier between the old and new school user of ham radio. There are people (and even T-Shirts) that proclaim that only "real" ham radio operators know CW.
To me (and this is where I get downvoted to oblivion) learning CW is like learning Klingon - you CAN learn it, and it's impressive to learn the language, but in the real world, the cost/benefit doesn't even out.
We have smartphones that can answer almost any question in the world at an instant. I have a TV that can show me more movies for free than I could ever watch in a lifetime. I can spend under $30 to talk on my local repeater. But, the mere suggestion that CW be treated as another digital mode (ie with software to encode/decode) will get me shouted down in hundreds of radio clubs across the country.
I hope I've worded this carefully enough, because it's been circling in my mind for a while and I just don't understand. Why is it so pedestrian, so ignorant, so OBSCENE to suggest that CW should be as easy to use as JT65?
