Astigmatism and Contact Lenses - Was told 5 years ago that they simply wouldn't work for me. I want to try again - waste of time?
I've always had to wear glasses, and I'm not really sure why. I know I have astigmatism, but I couldn't tell you if I had good or bad astigmatism (I'm guessing it must be pretty bad, as I constantly require glasses - my right eye is significantly worse than my left).
About five years ago, I went for a contact lens test. Now I don't remember much of this, but I do remember him saying that my eyes were quite dry. I had contact lenses fitted, waited about 20 minutes and tried to read something. My vision stayed blurry. As soon as I said this, the optician said that this meant that contact lenses just wouldn't work for me - something about the rotation of the lenses having to be just right or they wouldn't work. I remember asking if there was any way to get them to work, and he said that there could be technological improvements in the future, but didn't instil any hope in me.
I was a bit sad that contact lenses weren't even an option for me. I've always worn glasses, and would've liked the chance to try without them!
But I've been reading around, and a lot of people had similar experiences to me and said they had to try multiple different lenses before they found one that suited their eyes. Is there any logic or truth to this? I understand, now, that the rotation of the lens and dryness of the eyes are very important factors, and that maybe I just have a really bad pair of eyes.... But is there any worth in going back to Specsavers and asking for another test? Should I just give up on contact lenses and start saving for corrective eye surgery?
