Sapphire R9 390 experiencing frame drops when overclocking, and underclocking.

Open | Software

Hello r/techsupport,

For the past few weeks I have had a puzzling issue with my graphics card. When I use MSI Afterburner to overclock my Sapphire R9 390's core clock, my frames immediately drop from around 120 to 30 in Furmark, and there is noticeable stuttering in games as well. This happens even when I use my "extra-safe" overclock (underclocked from my already-stable overclocked), and even when I overclock by 1 MHz. Puzzlingly, this also happens when I underclock my GPU by any amount. Only the factory clock has a stable framerate.

I have already reinstalled MSI Afterburner and downloaded the latest drivers straight from the AMD website. I still haven't found a solution.

Specs:

  • CPU: Intel i5-6600k
  • Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z170M-D3H
  • GPU: Sapphire AMD R9 390
  • 16GB G-Skill RAM

The base clock for the GPU is 1040 MHz Core Clock, and 1500 MHz Memory clock. Any changes to the core clock tank my framerate.

Thanks for the help!
