Munchausen by Proxy is no joke
This is a story my wife told me about where she had a student that suffered from PTSD. My wife was a middle school teacher and one year she go an IEP (individual education plan) for a girl in her class. The IEP stated that by no means was she allowed to ask the girl if she was feeling ok, how her day was, or anything regarding the girl's current state of being. She could only acknowledge the girl by saying hello, nodding her head and moving on.
Why did this girl suffer from PTSD at the ripe old age of 12? Her mother suffered from Munchausen by Proxy. She would ask the girl how she was feeling in the morning before school, if the girl gave any response beyond where she was "ok" the mother would tell her that oh, she must be hiding her sickness and that mom would take care of her. This went on for years before the girl started having break downs before school, even during classes. Father found out, divorced the mom and moved out with kids in tow.
The mother had visitation rights but had to be supervised. Anytime the mother asks how her daughter is doing, visitation ends at that moment and the child is removed. Poor girl suffered from PTSD and would relive her trauma anytime anyone asks her something innocuous as "How are you today?"
Holy shit some people are fucked up.
Edit: Fixed what IEP stands for. In terms of IEPs in this school district, they get some pretty crazy ones. When you have a school district in a very wealthy town surrounded by parents who want their kids to be the best, regardless if there's something wrong with them, you get IEPs that are just out there. For instance, my wife had one kid with an IEP that said the kid had to have an audio system complete with speakers next to his desk and my wife had to use one of those clip on mics every class for this kid. Parent claimed the kid was hard of hearing; he wasn't hard of hearing, he just chose to ignore the craziness of his bat-shit insane mom. How did my wife find out? She cranked up the speaker system slightly and noticed the kid cringe. After that, the kid pushed to not have the system anymore.
Edit 2: The girl was receiving treatment for the PTSD from what I recall of the story. In terms of finding out how the mom had MbP, they started noticing their daughter having nervous break downs. By this point, the parents were divorced so of course Dad didn't see the daughter all of the time. Once she started having the break downs at school as well as in front of the Dad, they started taking her to see a therapist to figure out what was wrong. It was through therapy they realized that she was suffering from PTSD and found the trigger behind it. That's when it came out the Mom has MbP, lost her ability to have the kids stay over on weekends and had supervised visitation. Not sure about the girl today, never really asked.
