Can I change the appearance of a cloze deletion when it is part of a LaTeX equation?

I created a cloze deletion card for a LaTeX equation (below). It shows most of equation, and I have to figure out the missing variable. It works great, but the missing variable doesn't stand out when the answer is revealed. It's not text, so the color doesn't change like it would on a normal cloze deletion card.

Anyone have a solution? I thought about making separate cards for each of the three deletions and changing the LaTeX formatting, but I feel the improvement doesn't justify the extra trouble (i.e. I'm too lazy)
