God Overcoming Facts
I recently heard a quote with unknown origins saying "The reason I'm not impressed with science and scientists is because the lord almighty can overcome all those so called "facts" in the blink of an eye" and it got me thinking.
Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that this is correct. God could, if he so desired, pop down at any time and tell us that all the science stuff we've ever observed only ever happened because he decided, on a whim, to put it there and now he was going to make all of it behave radically differently. He hasn't yet, and I don't think he ever will, but he could at any moment.
But all of that is equally true if you replace the word "science" with "religion". It seems like this quote hurts its own stance exactly as much as its opposition's. How is this statement able to support a religious belief structure over and above a scientific one?
EDIT: The original version of this post incorrectly attributed the quote it is centered around to a US Senator. As it turns out, the Senator never actually said it. It's still a pretty neat quote, though - even though we don't know who originally stated it.
