Snapchap crops camera roll photos?

If I select a photo from my camera roll to snap, it will let me add text or emojis in the black space above and below the photo, but then when I send/post it crops all of it out! So annoying! If they're not going to display anything outside the photo, why allow editing in that space at all? Does this happen to everybody? Has Snapchat ever addressed this annoyance? I'm running Snapchat on a Galaxy S7 with all current updates. Thanks!
