Doctors: how would you react if a parent did this?
Hi everyone,
In June this year, I found out via reading a letter on my GP's screen that my father (65/M) has been speaking to my (27/F) gynaecologist in January of this year. My gynaecologist called the home phone earlier in the year to deliver some test results, and I wasn't home. While my father had my gynaecologist on the phone, he decided to talk to my gynaecologist for a good 10 minutes or so, and say that I have been committing acts of domestic violence against my parents, and that he thinks it is because of the medication I am on (Zoladex) to treat my endometriosis.
The thing is, it's actually my father that has been emotionally and physically abusing me. Anyway, my gynaecologist listed emphatically, and referred my parents to a psychologist for themselves to deal with my "abuse" that he and his wife apparently took their mentally ill son to. He also wrote a letter to all my specialists (I have SLE), and GP to tell them that I am a perpetrator of domestic violence. He highlighted to them that this was a confidential call, and that they mustn't say anything to me.
The next time I saw him, he took me off Zoladex, and put me on another hormone that hasn't been nearly as effective, and I've been in pain pretty much ever since. He also kept emphasising that I should "listen to my parents' advice". I was pretty suspicious and asked my mother if she'd spoken to him, but she said no.
When I confronted my father, he got very angry with me, slapped me across the face, and told me that he has the right to speak to whoever he likes about whatever he likes. My mother wanted to make a complaint to my GP for letting me see the letter.
I haven't been back to see my gynaecologist since, and I'm not sure what to do. He is a world-leader in endometriosis, and has been a fantastic doctor in every way up until now.
If you're a doctor, how would you have dealt with this situation? Do you think my doctor has behaved unethically? I'm quite angry, but he's a great doctor in every other way, so I'm not sure what to do.
Many thanks in advance!
