New to Houston! Meetup.com?

Hey all! I did check history and it seems the last time this question was asked was over 2 years ago.

I'm a Toronto transplant, and moved just about 2 weeks ago for work. Wondering how active meetup groups are and how they work...? Do you just show up to events and look for a group of people? Are people generally noob friendly?
