Does getting a dog cost as much as they say?

I am wanting to get a dog my last year of university. I have interned throughout my schooling so I have money saved up but will not have a flowing income when I get the dog. Saying that, I won't be home as much in the rest of my life as I will be in the next 8 months until I graduate (short list of classes mean more free time). Should I get a dog?
