German specialty beers?

My gf's dad is Belgian, and when I first met him he got me a selection of different quality belgian beers that tasted pretty amazing. Now I want to show him what germany has to offer, however I don't want to get him just any popular brands.

Can anyone here tell me about obscure high quality sort of premium brand beers from germany? Or any hints on how to find them?
