The All Blacks basically used FIT touch rugby tactics to beat the Lions.

Analysis

I was thinking about this today. The ABs knew that the Lions would use a rush defense and to counter this they kept their backs spread across the field and left their forwards in around the ruck. Having their backs spread out meant that the Lions defense remained stretched across the field in anticipation of the ball going out wide. This is FIT Touch rugby 101, the attacking wings stay glued to either touch line in order to create space in the middle of the field. Meanwhile ground is made through the middle. Unlike NH style one out crash balls the ABs passed, off loaded and stepped in close quarters around the ruck to gain ground. These skills of passing and stepping in close quarters are honed playing FIT touch rugby. In FIT the ball never gets thrown deep, the game is played much flatter so their is less time and space for the attackers to work with. Ground is gained near the "ruck" as ball never goes out wide until play gets close to the try line.
