TW Warhammer surprisingly rekindled my love for TW
I was extremely skeptical of a fantasy setting, but the blessed summer sale finally convinced me to give warhammer a whirl.
And holy hell. I don't know about y'all but for the first time since first trying Rome 1 I've felt challenged, even in over my head.
Fighting as the empire against an vastly inferior army of beast men I very nearly lost due to their minotaurs. I was completely unprepared for the devestation monsters can wreak on your battle lines. I thought a unit or two of spears would be enough to hold them off but NOPE. My formation was shattered in under a minute and I only succeeded by drowning them in a sea's worth of my men's own blood.
In another vastly superior battle against the VC where they had half flying units (bats and vargheists) I thought, oh no big deal, I'll use my spears and halberdiers to hold them off while my swordsmen chop up the zombies. NOPE. They swarmed from the flanks and for the first time in probably 8 years I absolutely panicked. There was so much happening at once and throwing my infantry at them did nothing to slow their hit and run attacks. Worse yet the three enemy mages were able to drop magic on my forces unimpeded. I was routed before their zombies even made contact.
In all other TW games I've been able to follow the same basic formula and once the few new wrinkles are worked out it's world domination time. I'm currently slaving away in custom battles trying to figure out how to deal with all the new monsters and tactics before I dare touch the campaign again.
Good frickin job CA.
