Day 305 - (Humboldt State Park) Burlington Campground, CA to Benbow, CA - 26 miles

So I got up and packed up. As I was about to leave the campground I noticed a guy with a bicycle in the other Hike & Bike campsite. I had noticed a tent there last night but I decided to say hi since basically only people on cool trips use those sites. Ben is from Australia and is cycling from Portland to San Francisco. We'll overlap in SF for a day since he's flying home on July 4th, poor guy will miss the fireworks. We talked for a little bit, then each got going. It was already about 10am.

It turned out to be one really hot day. It was over 100 degrees at its peak. I just rested for a few hours during the middle of the day. It was miserable. The only redeeming factor was the shade from the redwoods. Since I started late and took a few hours off I was forced to walk until dark again. I had originally planned to camp in Garberville since it has a couple churches but one had had a fire and burned down and the other had absolutely no grass. I had also been warned there were a lot of tweakers in the town. I didn't want to risk camping somewhere open and potentially having my stuff stolen so I went south to Benbow which is about 3 miles down the road. I got in a little after sunset and went to the KOA they had there. It would apparently cost me $51 to camp for a night. Though they were willing to go down to $45. So I said "thanks anyway" and left. I ended up stealth camping a few hundred metres away off their property.
