So... Burning Wheel
The only RPG I have any significant experience with is D&D 4e. I've only just gotten back into the hobby recently with the 5e starter set and I'm having a total blast. Loving the system, and running some new players through dungeons brings back fond memories of years past.
One game that I had heard about back in the mid-2000s but never got around to playing was The Burning Wheel. I'm the kind of DM who is all about that sweet, sweet narrative progression. Sure I love badass, intense combat situations, and D&D is great for ass-kicking high fantasy with a healthy dose of narrative tossed in for good measure. However, one thing about TBW that has always struck me as fascinating is just how... well, different from the d20 system I'm used to it is with its "character burning," its belief systems, and the way that it handles narrative progression. From what I've listened to on podcasts and read about the game, it seems like the kind of tabletop RPG that focuses on telling epic fantasy stories that sound like something straight out of Lord of the Rings or The Wheel of Time. It seems like it does storytelling not quite like any other system out there. I've heard great things, but also not so great things regarding just how unwieldy the system is.
I suppose my question pertaining to this post is what do you think of The Burning Wheel? Is it worth playing for someone like me, who loves the narrative aspect of Dungeons & Dragons whenever I can push my players toward that facet of it?
