How did giraffes get long necks?

I mean, I know they evolved over millions of years, but how did having long necks really help them? Wouldn't shorter necked giraffes still have gotten enough food to survive and reproduce? Did female giraffes suddenly decide, "those long necked guys are way more handsome than the short necked guys"? How is it they are the only animal with such long necks?
