[Shielding: Brain] [Shielding: Clay] Wet clay packs glued to trapper hunting hat provide heavy duty shielding and warmth in winter and while sleeping.
Purchase a trapper hunting hat larger than your head size for room for wet clay packs. I reported in the post on trapper hats which model to order one size or two sizes larger than your head.
Using a measuring tape, mark the middle of the brim and the back of the hat. Cut off the straps to a neck clay pack:

Stick' N Seal by Loctite is less toxic glue. Glue the neck clay pack exactly in the middle of the hat. Start with one end of the neck clay pack on the inside top of the brim, down the brim, center of the crown and up the back.
If the neck clay pack is glued off centered, the hat will lean to one side. If you make a mistake, remove the neck clay pack while the glue is still wet. After the glue dried, the clay pack cannot be peeled off sheepskin shearling. Clay packs can be peeled off cotton, polyester, leather and carbon welding blankets. While peeling, cut between the shearling and the clay pack using a sharp scissors.
Cut off the straps of two wet clay eye masks. Do not purchase eye mask with dry clay beads:
The eye mask has an indentation in the center for a nose. Hold the eye mask with the indentation on the bottom as if you were going to wear it over your eyes. Glue an eye mask on each side of the crown. Over lap the eye masks to prevent a gap between the neck and the eye masks.
Alternatively glue a 9 inch ice bag to the crown
Ice bags have an one inch high cap. The cap raises the helmet one inch. The slurry (clay and water) inside the ice bag raises the helmet further. If your large helmet cannot be raised this high, choose the neck and eye packs. Their height is very narrow.
The dimensions of the crown of the Klondike helmet is 8 1/2 inches x 7 1/2 inches. A six inch ice bag is too small. A 9 inch ice bag fits in my XXL Klondike helmet and my Zavelio helmet.
The bottom of the Klondike hat is tampered more like an aviator helmet. The hat remains centered on my head. I have an average size head.
CVS Pharmacy sells its brand name 11 inch long ice bag. Too big for a helmet or hat. The size is OK to place over a body part such as an abdomen. Since the ice bag has no straps, moving would make this clay pack fall off. Clay remains wet.
Walmart sells a 9 inch ice bag manufactured by Mueller. It has a TPU liner. TPU is thermoplastic. Mueller does not manufacturer a 11 inch or six inch ice bag. This ice bag has not leaked but the slurry dries out somehow. Twice, I had to refill the bag with water and knead the bag to make slurry. Thermoplastic is not supposed to wick. This bag wicks. What percentage of thermoplastic does the lining have?
This six inch ice bag has a thermoplastic lining. Clay remains wet:
Make the slurry extremely thick slurry. Like lumpy gravy. Not thin like pea soup. Fill the ice bag 2/3 inches deep. Test. If you need more shielding, add more slurry. If you need less shielding, squeeze out some slurry to reduce to 1/2 inch deep.
Test whether the ice bag wicks moisture from the clay by waiting one week and checking the depth of the clay. Open the cap and put your finger inside. Is the slurry still slurry? Or did the slurry dehydrate? If the moisture was wicked, purchase an ice bag consisting of a different material and retest. Dried clay has less attenuation.
After testing is completed, glue the ice bag with the cap face down. If glued with the cap face up, the hard plastic is uncomfortable on top of the head.
