Review #1: Four Roses Yellow Label
I am a relatively new bourbon drinker who's experience with alcohol is mostly limited to cheap beer. However, lately, I've become attracted to bourbon because of the history behind the spirit and the generally sweet taste compared to other liquors. Having recently turned 22 and being a poor grad student, I live by a pretty strict budget, and following that trend, I'll be aiming to keep my reviews of bottles under $25. This is my first review so thanks for putting up with my vague descriptions, and I'd welcome any advice.
Bourbon: Four Roses Yellow Label
Proof: 80
Age: NAS
Price: On sale for $18.99 in PA
Color: Light amber
Nose: Some rye spice, apples, light vanilla
Taste: Rye spice becomes a little more prominent. A little bit of apple, but not as much as the smell would suggest. Caramel and vanilla. There aren't a ton of different flavors going on, but they work well together. Either because of my inexperience or because there isn't a lot going on, I'm finding it difficult to zero in on a defining flavor.
Finish: Light finish that fades away pretty quickly. A little bit of spice hangs around for a few seconds.
Overall: Not bad, but nothing that sets it apart as particularly good. Has a very light taste and minimal burn that doesn't offend, so I would feel good about recommending this to a new drinker. However, I will probably be looking for something a bit more complex in the future.
Score: 74 (C)
Thanks for reading. I'd appreciate any suggestions to improve my reviews or recommendations on what to try next.
Edit: Thanks for the feedback and recommendations! I've gone out and purchased bottles of Old Forester, and Evan Williams BiB and plan on doing reviews of both in the near future.
