Jeanne D'Arc Alter Interlude Translation

Story Translation

<<<<< Arrow 1 >>>>>

JAlter: In the depths of this dark, lightless ocean, I came into existence and let out my first cries. The purpose of my creation was clear, though its likeness was the absolute worst.
Just as somebody once said, "Revenge is sweet".
-- However, I lost. In an instant, everything became meaningless.
My existence. My life. My soul. The very concept of me.
That is surely why I had no other choice than to start over from zero.

???: In the first place, Extra Class servants were split off from the regular servant classes in order to take on certain roles, but...
-- of them, the Avengers are a particularly peculiar class.
Rulers differ in their role as overseers of Holy Grail Wars, but one could say that for Avengers, their very class itself is that which distinguishes them.
On top of that, "her" very existence is an anomaly in and of itself. She, who was born from the wish granting device known as a Holy Grail--
Jeanne Alter is an existence permitted by the world, due to her dependency on the hero known as Jeanne d'Arc. The circumstances of her second birth is something we will eventually discuss as well, but setting that aside for now...
To rely on the Holy Maiden Jeanne d'Arc for her survival is certainly not something Jeanne Alter could withstand.
Even if her existence was no more than a fleeting dream - no, ephemeral like a bubble -
She wanted to float into the sky under her own strength.
Well well, there was no helping it. That overly serious nature of hers is certainly something that didn't change.
Master, please continue to guide her well.

<< scene change >>

Billy: Alright, that's a bust! The luck sure wasn't on your side there, huh Mash?

Mash: No, it wasn't...

Cu: Is it really just a problem of her luck? You're not cheating are you, Billy-kun?

Billy: Hey, I know full well which people I should cheat against, and which ones I shouldn't. Mash is definitely one of the latter - she deserves a straight and honest contest.

Guda: Hit me!<< / Stay

Cu: Seriously? With a hand like that!?

Billy: Dreaming big, are we?

... not bad. It's your win.

Cu: You're pretty used to this, well played. That's gonna make things interesting.

Alright, deal out the next hand! I'll take the early loss here, but I don't lose at gambling! Let's keep going 'til the sun comes up-

Guda: A rare person showed up...<<

JAlter: ... I was wondering what all the fuss was about, but to think the lot of you were gambling...

Cu: Hey now, some entertainment is necessary every now and then, isn't it, <Master Name>?

Mash: Yes, the last few days have been full of fixing minor singularities.
Did you need something, Jeanne-san? If it's anything I could help with...

JAlter: ... Don't call me Jeanne. Please, don't lump me in together with that... holy woman.

Mash: Eh!? B, but... then... Black Jeanne-san?

JAlter: ... No.
I'm a separate existence that was split off from Jeanne d'Arc's womb. Just call me Jeanne Alter.

Guda: Did you want to play too, Jeanne Alter?<< / Did you need something...?

JAlter: No, I don't. Card games and such are nothing more than swindling, aren't they? I already know about them!

Billy: Well now, that's an awfully narrow-minded way of looking at it! Not that you're wrong, for the most part!

Cu: Oh?

Billy: Now now, I did say for the most part.

JAlter: Nevermind that. Let's go fix some singularities, <Master Name>. You should think of yourself as fundamentally having no free time.

Mash: I don't think we've received reports of any singularities though...

JAlter: Hmph, I didn't word that correctly.
It hasn't even become a minor singularity yet. However, there's a place that will definitely become one.

Billy: Hmmm... you're pretty good at sniffing those out. Is that the instinct of an Avenger class servant?

JAlter: ... Something like that.

Mash: But it's Senpai's first chance for a break in a while...

Guda: There's no helping it, I'll go.<< / Alright, let's do it!

JAlter: It's your obvious duty as a Master. Well then, let's go.

Cu: Well, can't help it if it's a singularity. I'll tag along, <Master Name>. You coming too, Billy?

Billy: Ehhh, I'm not really feeling it, so I'll pass. Someway or another, I feel like I won't be particularly useful. I will get someone to take my place though, hold on a sec.

JAlter: ... How frivolous of him. Outlaws are so...

Cu: Hey now, watch your mouth. If we're talking 'bout selfishness, you're no better.

Mash: I'm worried about Senpai's health, since you've lost a day off... but for now, I'll prepare for the navigation!

<< scene change >>

Da Vinci: Hm, there's no response though.

JAlter: Of course there isn't. It hasn't become a singularity yet.

Da Vinci: I would love to ask exactly how you know that, but... well, it's fine. For now, I'll trust you this time. The rayshift will be performed with three servants - Cu Chulainn, Jeanne Alter, and...

Geronimo: Me. The youngster asked me to.

Da Vinci: Oh? It's rare to see you take action.

Geronimo: Perhaps. However, that youngster's gut feeling is often correct.

Mash: I agree, he's a strong opponent in card games.

JAlter: Our rayshift destination will be in France, the former first singularity. That place, where we're currently repairing the humanity foundation.

<< scene change >>

Geronimo: France... so this place is where the Evil Dragon Hundred Years' War took place, as part of the first singularity.

JAlter: That's right. If you wanted to, you could call this trip cleanup work for that singularity. In other words, we'll be exorcising ghosts.

Mash: Jeanne Alter-san. What exactly do you mean by ghosts...?

JAlter: For now, just follow me. You'll understand soon enough.

Mash: Ah, Jeanne Alter-san!

Cu: Ah geez, let's get a move on I guess. I'll bring up the rear.

Geronimo: I shall accompany <Master Name>. It's just as she said, I can feel wandering spirits in this area. However, even if left unattended, they should eventually disappear without affecting the humanity foundation...

<< scene change >>

Cu: Well now, that's a sorry-looking lot.

Geronimo: A swarm of evil spirits. However...

JAlter: As servants, the two of you should understand as well. There is very potent malice here. If left alone, it's something that will definitely cause harm. Now then, <Master Name>. Let's exorcise some ghosts. Prepare yourself, and fight.

<< battle >>

Cu: Man, that left a bad taste in my mouth. No wonder Billy ditched.

Geronimo: ... These spirits are...
Jeanne Alter.
Are you simply finishing them off? Do you seek atonement? Or is there something else you're hoping to gain from all this.

JAlter: Atonement, finishing off enemies, none of that matters to me. I'm here simply to start anew.
It's something the previous me left behind, after all.

Geronimo: How conscientious of you. It's certainly good to make a distinction. After all, any of us could be summoned and put to work for the other side.

JAlter: That may be the case for you guys, as proper heroic spirits. However, it's different for me. To me, the stains I've left behind are part of my very being.

Cu: Ah, Master. What now? These evil spirits may be harmful, but if the question is whether or not they'd affect the humanity foundation... that's a no. They'd probably devour some animals or people at worst, but as things stand, it's not like there are any people around here anyway. Far as I can tell, that town over there doesn't have a single living person in it any way-

Guda: Let's go.<<

Cu: ... s'what I thought you'd say. Still, if there's no benefit to what we're doing, it's hard to get motivated, y'know?

Geronimo: Ah, if that's the case, I have a message for you from Billy. It seems like he's willing to erase your debt.

Cu: Oh, is the case, Geronibro! Alright, now I'm a little motivated.

JAlter: ... Hmph. Well, as long as you're willing, I don't particularly care what your motivation is. Let's go to that town, <Master Name>. ... or rather, Master. That's fine, isn't it?

<<<<< Arrow 2 >>>>>

Mash: ... Just as Cu Chulainn-san stated, there's nobody here.

Geronimo: No, something is here. You should be able pick up the readings even from there.

Mash: ... yes, there are no lifesigns other than Master's. All of the other anomalous beings there are spirits.

JAlter: That's right. This town fell into ruin long ago. Even with the world repaired, and the inhabitants returned... the humanity foundation only restores history. The grudges and laments that accumulated in this era still remain. Such malice and despair do not disappear so easily, in other words. As if following a rhythm, it's possible they can resurface.
... Now then. The next wave is closing in. Are you ready?

Guda: I'm ready.<< / I think so.

Geronimo: ... Master, just in case. The readiness she speaks of is not with regards to the upcoming battle. Rather, she asks if you are ready to rid this world of the countless, once innocent spirits that have been twisted into their current forms.

... For now, they are almost upon us! Prepare yourself!

Ghost-kun A: It hurts... it hurts... it's... so painful...

Ghost-kun B: Help me... help me... noooo... I don't wanna die...

Ghost-kun C: I'm dying... I won't die... I'm dying... I'm dead... Kill me... I'll kill you....

Ghost-kun ?: I'll
Kill
All
Of
You

<< battle >>

<<<<< Arrow 3 >>>>>

Mash: ... Master, please stay alert! If you're not careful, you'll get possessed and killed!

JAlter: Those spirits no longer even understand who it is they should be hating. If someone were to come here whilst repairing the humanity foundation is underway, they would be possessed and killed.
... If you wish to prevent that, then we need to make them all move on.
They are without sin, and without fault. However, once they become an evil spirit, there is no saving them.

Geronimo: ... Do you understand, <Master Name>? Why they without sin, without fault, became evil spirits.
It goes without saying. It is the fault of Jeanne Alter, who you summoned. More accurately, it was the work of Jeanne Alter while she was alive...

Mash: ... They're... the victims of the Evil Dragon Hundred Year War, aren't they...

Geronimo: Of course, Jeanne Alter, who committed the sin in the first place, has already been defeated. There should certainly be no need to place any blame on the newly summoned Jeanne Alter. However - if that is the case, then why was she summoned as an Avenger class servant?

Cu: Ah, I guess what Geronimo's trying to say is this -
Does the black holy maiden have any interest in helping us servants with our supposed job of "helping to fix the humanity foundation"? If the answer's no, then you can't really call her <Master's Name>'s servant, can you. She'd just be an idiot getting her jollies by abusing her position as a servant.
So... which one are ya?

JAlter: ... That's what I myself want to know, most of all. That's why I'm here.
Well, it seems to be mostly what I expected.

Mash: ... In other words...?

JAlter: I thought I might perhaps find pleasure in taking revenge. But I'm certainly not... getting my jollies. This is so disgusting I could throw up.

Geronimo: ... Hoh, that is good. Certainly, this is no agreeable task. By the way, you certainly won't be saved by destroying these spirits. Why, then, do you persist?

JAlter: Who said anything about being saved? After all, I'm nothing more than an ephemeral dream. Regardless of the consequences, I'll keep pushing forward, and leave nothing behind. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with this kind of existence. I don't exist for the sake of atoning for my sins, or to be saved. I'm here to help you win your battles.
I won't forget that. That, alone, I won't forget.

Cu: Heh.

Geronimo: Humu.

Guda: ... I guess that's right. / Thank you.<<

JAlter: ... Pft, I don't need your gratitude.
... Now then, all that's left is the castle.

Cu: Well I've come this far, I'll see it through to the end.

Geronimo: Yes, but I would like to see your conclusion at the end. Not your confession, but your logic.

<< scene change >>

Ghost-kun R: ... Ugh... why... why...! Why was I.... ohhhh....

Ghost-kun S: Kill... kill them... couldn't... protect...

Ghost-kun T: Why... did God... that kind of...

JAlter: What a repulsive atmosphere. These dead, who can do nothing more than lament the tragedy that befell them. Come, stand! I am here! Cease your wailing, and fight me! With the power you didn't possess in life, try and punish me for my sins!

Mash: ... Uh, umm... Jeanne Alter-san, what exactly...?

Ghost-kuns: You... you! How dare you... howdareyouhowdareyouhowdareyouuuuuuuu!
Diediediediediediediediediediedie!!!

Cu: Idiot, you taunted them too much! Look, they're starting to merge!

Geronimo: ... Their hatred towards her is combining to form a monster. However, this is... I see. You're trying to save - nevermind. It would be thoughtless of me to say more.

<< battle >>

ZA HORDE: ... you... yo...ou....

JAlter: So you just barely managed to retain your self awareness, I see. Charles the 7th.

Mash: ...!

CHARLES: Jea...nne... how dare... you... lay hands... on... the innocent... citizens...

JAlter: Yes, I did exactly that. That's why I laid my hands on them, once again. This alone, I could leave to neither the purest of heroes, nor the most atrocious of anti-heroes. You, your servants who so adored you, and your citizens - I killed each and every one of them.
I'm not looking for justification, or redemption, or punishment, or entertainment.
I'm doing nothing more than fulfilling my duty as a servant...!

CHUCK: Duty... I see, so you... consider this... a duty...
We will continue to detest you, and curse your name. And yet, now, will you no longer hate...

JAlter: ... ...
Did you know, Master?
If you followed your proper version of history, Charles the 7th would, 18 years after my... no. 18 years after her death, would push for a retrial of Jeanne d'Arc. Just how simple and straightforward she was, and just how much did she risk her life to fight for their sake. In order to prove that, he requested a retrial in order to overturn the original verdict.
... I wonder, was that an attempt at atonement? Or did he simply want to rid himself of his guilty conscience. Perhaps he even wished to be saved himself.
... Well, now that he's dead, it's all lost in the darkness of the abyss regardless.

Cu: Well, even if you did know, it wouldn't change a damn thing - that's life. Besides, it's not like you of all people actually wanna know, right?

JAlter: Yes, you're right. I don't particularly care to know, and even if I did, it would be meaningless. The holy woman would probably be pleased to... no, she probably wouldn't be particularly happy about it either.
She's not the kind to care about what people thought of her after death. I mean, it doesn't seem like she particularly cared what people thought of her during life, either.

Geronimo: Regardless of the details, a suitable conclusion has been reached. That's the important part. And you did not pass the specifics of the situation on to anyone else, even though it wouldn't have mattered who accomplished this.
The rationality and pride you hold in those hands, is the very proof that you are worthy of being a servant.
Jeanne Alter. By your own actions, you have shown that you are a proper servant.

Mash: Yes. Jeanne Alter-san is a splendid servant!

JAlter: Hmph.
-- Now, this boring farce has drawn to a close.
Let's continue our humanity foundation repairs, Master. Let us bid farewell to this finished area. The death that was clinging to this land has been dispelled, without question. New life will surely sprout again here, someday, even if my sins aren't washed away - that is the way of this world.

<<<<< Profile Update >>>>>

With the accumulation of a number of circumstances, it has become possible to summon the black Holy Maiden as a fabricated existence.
In general she will be abrasive towards her Master but as her spiritual basis, the Holy Maiden Jeanne, was quite softhearted, fundamentally she will demonstrate feelings of respect and affection for her Master.
She has no girlish interests, but she did have a maidenly aspiration.
"In the depths of her consciousness, she wants to carry out the tense and uneasy duties of an Avenger while surrounded by bishounen that are her type!" is the comment from a servant who is an Avenger class like her.
