Are colours really much better on an IPS vs VA? AOC AG352UCG vs X34

Ascension

Hi r/UWMR,

Choosing my ultrawide monitor this past week and I've read the articles comparing IPS and VA but wanted to get your opinions as well.

Putting aside the issue of BLB and better contrast on a VA monitor, how does it compare when it comes to colour? I heard in some places that they are both similar once calibrated. Is that true?

Choosing between AOC AG352UCG (or z35p if it goes on sale) and X34.

Would be grateful for any feedback.

Those VA panels have terrible colour calibration out of the box. I'd like to see it after having a proper ICC profile added and calibrated properly. I feel I doubled the quality of my AOC with some tweaking

Same here. Would like to know if those monitors were tampered with because it's very easy to make another monitor look worse than it actually is. (For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgBzpYTn_8c )

Wow, actually quite noticeable.

Very. IPS is king for quality.

Good lord, the difference is not subjective. Thanks for this

IPS has better viewing angles and colors while VA doesn't and it has better blacks I believe. Try to get a x34 refurbished I got one for $740 before tax the other day

Definitely go IPS if you can. No other panel is nearly as good. If you have 2 panels (IPS and VA) that have the same color gamut coverage, then yes when calibrated they will be basically the same. However, IPS panels tend to have better color gamut coverage, so you can get better color than is possible with VA.

They all have drawbacks. IPS has worse contrast ratio, IPS glow, and many suffer from backlight bleed, making them not look so good in dark environments. Meanwhile VA has worse viewing angles and ghosting.

Viewing Angles don't bother me, especially as the AOC has a sharper curve.

What I wonder about is the colour difference, if it's really noticable.

In general yes they're better and it is noticeable, but you have to go see for yourself. Try microcenter if there's one near you.

I started with an LG IPS and returned it because the colors looked abysmal. Terrible contrast and terrible backlight glow. Dark scenes in games were always gray, never black. I tried calibrating it to no avail. I replaced it with another LG IPS with the exact same issues, which I returned again. I switched to a (sadly not ultrawide) Samsung VA panel and couldn't be happier with the colors. Vibrant colors and dark blacks, no ridiculous backlight glow. Personally I can't see the bad viewing angles argument as my computer monitor is not meant for anyone other than me to be looking at, especially not for any significant amount of time. I've never tried a VA panel that wasn't Samsung QDot but I truly don't understand the "VA is terrible" circlejerk

Hey, thanks for your response (really).

Out of interest, which Samsung do you have?

I am leaning towards the AOC (VA panel) at the moment, as it has a nice curve and after reading the very detailed reviews, the colours (gamut, delta, sRBG) are on par with the X34 and other IPS models.

The only reason I am considering AOC over Samsung (I've been looking at C34F791) and is because of G-sync.

I currently have the C27FG70. If it was ultrawide and at least 1440p I would be overwhelmingly happy with it. I am looking to upgrade to the CF791 as well. The AOC would be my second choice but it is a standard MVA panel and not Samsung QDot which makes me worried it will be an entirely different experience, but I have no actual basis for that.

I went from TN to IPS and I honestly wasn't blown away as many people expect you to be. You'll notice some difference but the difference isn't massive.

If you can get a good VA monitor at a good price, go for it.
