Summer Reading

This fall when I start college I'm taking a literature class. I have seen the list of books we cover in the class. Should I start reading them now?

That sounds like a great way to get a head start! The only risky thing is that your professor could change the books ... but I would go ahead and do it if you have the time !

To add to what others are saying about the teacher eliminating books, literature also becomes thematized. Often, your instructor will lead discussions that would affect the way you approach a text and what you look for. For example, your teacher might begin to look at how the US Civil War shaped literature, which you might not pick up on your own when reading Twain or Thoreau before the class begins. Without this context, it may be difficult to do well on the assessments without re-reading the book anyway, depending upon how good your memory is and your reading abilities.

I would suggest reading the first one or two books listed but not many more. Teachers can change the required books and it would suck if you read a whole list of books that were changed. Then, once you start class ask the teacher what books he assigns, and then finish the reading.
