[8/23/2017 12:30 PM EST] IAMA with Paul Scharre on AI and International Security

Pinned

Hi! I’m Paul Scharre, and I’ve spent nearly a decade examining the national security implications of robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence.

I'm a former Army Ranger with multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and a former Pentagon policy official.

When I worked at the Defense Department, I wrote the Pentagon's official policy directive on the use of autonomy in weapon systems.

I currently lead the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) where I work on the policy implications of emerging technologies.

I've been actively involved in international discussions on autonomous weapons and have given multiple presentations to the United Nations.

I’ll be joined by my colleague Greg Allen, who works with me on our Artificial Intelligence and Global Security Initiative at the CNAS.

Greg recently completed a study, "Artificial Intelligence and National Security," on behalf of the U.S. Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity which was published by the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

We think it's vitally important to bring together the technology and policy communities to together navigate the challenges associated with artificial intelligence. You can learn more about our work at cnas.org/ai.
